About Cultural Life

Hi there, I’m Grace. I started blogging in 2011 and spending time here, writing posts and reading other people’s blogs, is one of my favorite things to do in my spare time.

So, why “Cultural Life”? My blog name origin story stems from my interest in writing about multiple topics which are broadly related to culture: books, movies, music, language and linguistics, food, travel and the world.

Cultural Life gives me the freedom to write about aspects of my life as well as acknowledging that our daily lives are bound up in culture.

Until 2015, this bio focused on my academic aspirations. My plan was to finish my undergraduate degree, specializing in linguistics, and go straight to grad school, followed by an academic job. As I wrote then: “I like to think that I have my career neatly planned and mapped out for the next decade or so (i.e. study, study and more study!) but who knows what is around the next corner?”

That sentence was strangely accurate — who knows what is around the next corner, indeed? I graduated successfully in 2015 and began my Master’s degree a few months later. However, due to several reasons (including the fact that I unexpectedly found a wonderful job shortly after I graduated), I decided to put it on pause.

Since 2015, I have been working as a writer for an internal comms and employee research agency. Our writing and storytelling is driven by data and I find it very interesting to look for the story in the numbers.

My love of linguistics is still strong, but for now I’m happy to put my academic aspirations on indefinite hold. I have blogged about my love for academia, and that hasn’t gone away, but this choice simply felt right. And one of the best things about writing here is that it gives me a space to talk about linguistic research and academic issues.

I enjoy being part of the WordPress community, and I’ve got to know so many wonderful bloggers here. Cultural Life is a space for me to write about topics that I love. My proudest moment so far as a blogger was when the WordPress editors chose one of my posts to be Freshly Pressed.

It was an emotional post for me to write and I was blown away by all the lovely comments and the amazing amount of hits my blog received. Here’s a link to my FPed post: Saying GoodbyeYou can check out a showcase of my other posts in the Best of Cultural Life section.

  1. Thanks for commenting on my blog because it led me to your site… I love it. I’m a Sociology minor and absolutely love the importance of culture and it’s significance in our own lives. I look forward to the various things you’ll be posting, from food to quotes to news to books. As always, feel free to stop by ohshinon anytime and collect a recipe from there 🙂

    • Thank you for the award nomination. I have accepted awards in the past but I recently made a decision to decline them. Please don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the sentiment behind award nominations and I’m really glad that people enjoy my blog. I don’t want to come across as being rude or ungracious by declining awards. But I have recently been nominated for a few different awards by various WordPress bloggers and it would simply take me too long to respond to all of them. Also, I don’t follow a huge amount of blogs – I have a select few which I read regularly – and I would simply run out of blogs to nominate!

Thanks for reading and following. Have a great day!

      • Don;t worry about it, truly..
I stopped at about 150 Awards, as I was doing more Awards than blogs,, Personally I noticed I was meeting less people so started up again.
And I have over 1,000 blogs to check over, IMPOSSIBLE 🙂
So I bookmark the people that talk back and visit, get the rest through reader. Really hard, as we do want to visit everyone, just can’t…
        ..Lest trying is good.. lol

        And totally no worries..
If I give you an Award in the future, just ignore it, it means I forgot. Top of my blog and to the right explains why …

        Thanks..
